In a world that rewards hustle, slowing down can almost feel wrong.
As an engineer, I’ve spent years building things. My mind is wired to solve problems, to optimize, to fix. I’m used to measuring success by output, more code, more progress, more impact. But somewhere along the way, I forgot how to simply be.
There’s a kind of courage that comes with slowing down. The courage to sit with yourself, to listen, to breathe through the need to rush. To trust that even in the stillness, you are still growing.
Slowing down doesn’t mean losing momentum, which is something I struggled with. It means reclaiming presence and learning to notice the details you once missed like the sound of your breath, the softness in your shoulders or the space between thoughts.
Finding Stillness in Overthinking
I recently started yoga teacher training, something that feels like a full-circle moment in my life.
Yoga has been an outlet for me for several years now. The main reason being that it’s the only thing that truly disconnects me from work. My job requires a lot of mental weight, complex decisions, debugging, and constant context switching. I live in logic all day, constantly analyzing, predicting, and planning.
Unfortunately, that analytical part of my brain doesn’t just clock out when the workday ends. Many nights, I’d lie awake replaying problems in my head. I’ve even solved issues in my sleep (literally debugging in my dreams) proof that my mind never truly rests.
But yoga was different. I didn’t know why or how, but the moment I stepped onto my mat, my mind went quiet. The part of me that was always wired finally let go.
That feeling of presence and peace is what led me here.
I joined yoga teacher training not because I wanted to teach right away, but because I wanted to understand why this practice brought such clarity when nothing else did. If practicing yoga without knowing its depth could calm my mind, I wondered what learning its philosophy and anatomy could do.
Every weekend, we explore the mind-body connection, breathwork, alignment, and philosophy. And I tend to find common ground between what I learn on the mat and what I experience as an engineer.
In yoga, alignment is important. You can’t just force your body into a shape, you have to build it consciously with awareness and patience. The same is true for building systems: you can’t just ship code, you have to understand the foundation, the dependencies, the flow.
A New Kind of Tool
In previous posts, I’ve written about the tools in my toolbox, the ones that helped me take on challenges, stay disciplined, and execute. The tools that helped me build my career and my confidence.
But this one is different.
𖥸 Yoga isn’t a tool that helps me do more. It’s a tool that helps me be more.
It’s not about powering through obstacles, it’s about pausing long enough to understand them. It’s not about achieving; it’s about aligning.
The deeper I go, the more I realize that yoga, beyond the asana, is one of the most powerful tools I’ve ever found. It quiets the noise. It calms anxiety through breath. It brings me back to center and reminds me that I can’t control what happens around me (the deadlines, the reorgs, the unexpected life events) but I can control how I react, how I respond, and how I carry it.
When I practice, it feels like I can stand still in a world that’s constantly moving. It’s balance in motion. It’s peace in the chaos.
I truly believe yoga should be in everyone’s toolbox. You don’t have to be flexible. You just have to be willing to breathe. To listen and meet yourself where you are.
Redefining Productivity
This journey has shifted how I define productivity. It’s taught me that slowing down isn’t a setback. When I move slower, I think clearer.
Every time I step on my mat now, I remind myself that yoga isn’t about perfection, it’s about connection. Connection to breath, to body, to something deeper than the noise of everyday life.
We live in a world that praises speed, how fast you grow, how fast you achieve, how fast you move on.
Slowing down means rising differently with intention, awareness, and lasting strength.
